Softscape Frequently Asked Questions

I want grass and I have sandy soil, what is best way to go about this?

Sandy acidic soil is a problem that is common around here and unfortunately grass prefers a basic and loamy soil. We recommend reversing this problem by bringing in a clay-based topsoil 6” thick before laying your seed or sod. The clay will increase the water retention of the soil, keeping it there longer for the grass to soak it up. A liming regiment with your regular fertilization will also help control the acid level of your soil.

What is the best time of year to plant?
There is not a concrete answer to this question. If you plant in the spring you give the plants a full growing season to flourish and there is a usually more variety and better availability in plant material. If you plant in the heat of the summer it is very important to remember to keep the new plants watered. They have not yet established their root systems and need water more frequently than established plants. The fall is probably the best time of year to plant, the air is cool and the soil is still warm so it encourages the plants to focus on their root systems instead of foliage. The downside is that many nurseries and greenhouse are done bringing in stock for the year so availability can sometimes be tricky.

How do I control the weeds in my newly installed landscape?
We recommend using either rock or mulch as a bed material and then applying a product like Preen to control any new seeds that get blown into the landscape. It is best to avoid harsh chemicals like round up in a new landscape as your plants are still establishing themselves. Preen will only affect seeds. And don’t forget about hand pulling!

Does a low maintenance landscape mean no maintenance? What level of maintenance can I expect?

There is no such thing as a 'no maintenance' landscape. Even a low maintenance landscape will require some attending to. In certain settings there are certain plants that look appropriate when not manicured, however most plants close to your home need to be trimmed at least yearly to provide a welcoming appearance.
