There are many reasons to begin a water-gardening hobby and many ways to jump into the water!

Thinking of joining the millions of Americans who have found the joy water gardening?

Bubblers and Container Gardening

The water gardening hobby is booming in the United States and there are several ways to incorporate a water feature into your landscape. If you are just looking to dip your toes into the water you can start with a fountain, bubbler, or container water garden. The sound of running water can enhance your outdoor experience and soothe those frayed nerves. A bubbler is a creative, fun and different way to involve water next to or on a patio or at an entry point to your home.

Boulders
There are a few ways you can do this. One way is to use a boulder, is to core it, and construct a basin underneath it. The water then flows up through the boulder and spills over back down into the basin underneath. The height of the boulder and the size of the pump are going to determine the amount of noise you get from the bubbler. The cost of installation on a bubbler will depend on the size and location.

Jars or Pottery
You can also apply this same concept, but use a jar or piece of pottery instead of the boulder. A colbalt blue jar could add a different dimension of color to your garden. There is also the option of a container water garden. You can get creative with your container; the only requirement is that is holds water! Create a housing for he pump so the water is cycled and filtered and then fill the container with water and rocks. You can incorporate koi, water lilies and any other water plants into your little water world.

Pondless Waterfalls

To bring the beauty and grace of moving water to your home, try a pondless waterfall. This is a stream that can be any length and empties into a basin at the end and leaves you with no standing water. Anything from a babbling brook to a crashing waterfall can be created. This is a wonderful solution for those that want the beauty and grace of moving water without the maintenance of a pond.

If plants and fish are permanent fixtures in your waterfall you just use some biological treatments to keep the water clear. If you elect not to have your plants in the water all you can treat the water much like a pool and add chlorine bleach as algae appears.

Winter shut down is no more that turning off the water fall and pulling the pump, setting it in a bucket of water in a place where is won’t freeze, like a heated garage or basement.

If you are ready to jump into water gardening a pond is what you want. A well-designed pond can create a retreat in your backyard and add to the enjoyment of your outdoor space.

Explore a watery ecosystem with your kids, discovery the joy of koi, be soothed by the running water and amazed by the plethora of colors of water lilies and other water plants.

The pond itself creates an eco-system and when everything else is in balance very little is needed to regulate the pond. No, no UV lights, not a mound of chemicals to apply, no daily sludge clean out. The fish eat the algae and various plant materials in the pond, as the fish droppings settle at the bottom of the pond they are broken down by bacteria, which in turn provide nutrients for the plants. It is possible to keep the koi in your pond all winter long also, which takes away the hassle of transferring them out of the pond every year.

Koi naturally go dormant in the cold winter months, so food is not an issue, all that is needed is a heater to keep an open hole in the ice for gas exchange either by use of a pump moving the surface or a heater. It is possible to keep your pond running all winter and add to the winter landscape.
